Winter Holidays Around the World: A Journey Through Festive Traditions

Introduction to Winter Holidays Around the World

Winter Holidays Around the World: Winter is more than a season, winter is an emotion. With cold and darkening days, the world turns to light this season.

Winter holidays connect us to one another in their own special and vibrant modes, whether it’s the snow-capped slopes of Europe or sunbaked beaches in the Southern Hemisphere.

Come travel with me through the experiences of my winter holidays all over this globe, in a time when we share our traditions and joy.

Switzerland That is to say a White Christmas

The one thing that I will never forget is the first time I spent Christmas in Switzerland.

Picture yourself, nestled in a quaint little chalet somewhere in the mountains of the Alps during winter, when it is so white outside that you almost need shades to prevent snow blindness.

There is the smell of fresh cookies with mulled wine, and you hear carolers singing old songs.

ZurichThe Christmas markets in Zurich are straight out of a dream. Stalls overflowing with artisan decorations, Swiss hot chocolates and steaming spiced cider create a magical vibe.

I spent Christmas Eve having a fondue with some locals and discovering how the Swiss cherished this simple but meaningful place of food.

Christmas and New Year in Different Japan

Winter Holidays Around the World: We are pleasantly surprised at Japan’s version of the winter holidays. Whereas Christmas is considered a family-oriented occasion in the West, it is more of a romantic holiday in Japan as well.

On one Christmas Eve, my partner and I strolled through the streets of Tokyo.

Beautiful light displays illuminated the city, and the evening ended with a traditional dinner at a small restaurant for couples.

After all, New Year’s is a very traditional holiday. When I was there stayed overnight at a temple at midnight for Joya no Kane where the monks rang the temple bell 108 times to get rid of each one of the years sins.

I celebrated New Year’s Day with friends, enjoying osechi ryori, a spread of aesthetically arranged dishes representing health, wealth and happiness.

This really allowed me to appreciate the respect and consideration that is prevalent in Japanese culture.

Rio | Carnival Vibes

You would not normally consider tropical beaches as a winter holiday destination but in my case that was blown out of the water when I arrived at Rio de Janeiro.

The famous floating Christmas tree in the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon shines next to Sugarloaf Mountain.

On one particularly memorable night, I celebrated Réveillon with locals in Copacabana, their New Year’s celebration.

We donned white for luck, danced to a live samba band, drank caipirinhas and waited for the fireworks over the ocean at midnight.

It was a symphony of happiness and dancing and ritual that felt like such a change from the more subdued holidays I had experienced in other areas.

A Cozy Danish Hygge

Winter Holidays Around the World: In Denmark, winter holidays are about hygge, a word that sums up the cozy warmth of togetherness.

It was the time I spent in intimate, candle-lit gatherings with friends and family.

There were steaming mugs of glogg, a Danish mulled wine, inside along with stories and roast pork and red cabbage.

For example, we visited Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. During the holidays, this amusement park transforms into a festive fairytale land with sparkling lights.

Christmas stalls and ice skating. It was like living in a fairy tale, and while the Danes have their fair share of complaints about our culture (hint: it has to do with simplicity and joy, or lack thereof), I came away from my time there inspired and curious.

Winter Celebrations in India are All Things Diversified

If its winter without snow leave it to India to show up the splendour of a holiday spirit far beyond compare.

I spent my Christmas with a twist in Goa. The city streets throve with music, of parades and midnight masses.

The holiday had a multicultural flavor with an infusion of Indians and their customs along with the Portuguese traditions.

Makar Sankranti, a harvest festival we celebrated in January, was another unforgettable winter experience.

During this time I joined locals in Gujarat and took part in kite-flying competitions, where the sky was as colorful as the sea.

What the community and celebrations conveyed was that much like anything else, winter holidays are celebrated on some level even where the climate is different.

The Northern Lights and Yule Lads of Iceland

Winter Holidays Around the World: It is an amazing winter holidays destination, and I enjoyed the Iceland experience of mine thoroughly.

The best part? Seeing the Northern Lights, which seemed like a holiday decoration hung by Mother Nature herself.

I stood beneath the flickering green and pink heavens, an indescribable connection to this world.

And it was great to learn about Iceland’s quirky Christmas tradition, the Yule Lads, a group of 13 mischievous trolls who visit children in the days before Christmas.

Kids put a shoe in the window every evening and wake up to either a present or a potato, depending upon their behavior. This combination of folklore and festivity was so special to my time in Iceland.

Germany is truly a wonderland in the festive season

When you think of Christmas, Germany naturally comes to mind and my stay there was a treat for the five senses. Nuremberg Christmas Market were like nothing I’d ever seen before.

The smell of roasted nuts, gingerbread and mulled wine wafted through the air as craftsmen presented their craft.

In a tiny Bavarian village, where I have now been invited to join locals for Adventskranz–the lighting of the candles on the Advent wreath.

This subdued ceremony followed by a few chuckles and some seriously heavy-duty meals had the appropriate mix of somber and celebratory.

That big surprise is brought to you the way only holiday traditions can anchor us.

Sunlit Celebrations Down Under

Different time of year: it was winter in the Northern Hemisphere but summer for Australia so we got to spend Christmas in Sydney and that was a totally different experience.

Instead of snow, sand; instead of cozy fires, beach barbecues.

You could spot crowds basking under the sun, catching waves and breaking bread in Bondi Beach.

I had never heard of some traditions though, such as Carols by Candlelight where communities gather outdoors to sing carols with thousands of lighted candles filling the night air.

This was a lovely reminder that the holiday season exists above and beyond weather and location.

Why Winter Holidays Around the World Unite Us

Winter Holidays Around the World: I was especially amazed with how each of these winter holidays, different in so many aspects, still had one thing in common: Connection.

And whether that is through family gatherings, or community celebrations, or just the quiet moments of remembrance; these holidays remind us of what we value.

I am reflecting on the friends I have made and the traditions to which I was fortunate enough to be introduced.

And winter holidays become a festive spirit shining within lives, brightening all the greyest days with its warm rays, from snowy chalets to tropical beaches.
